Clear answers about proctoring software, detection, exam-day prep, and academic integrity — so nothing about your exam comes as a surprise.
Proctored Exam Basics
What a proctored exam is, how online proctoring works, and what you need at home.
A proctored exam is a test administered under supervision — human, digital, or both — specifically to confirm that the person taking it is who they claim to be, and that they’re completing it independently, without unauthorized help. The in-person model is still alive and well on campuses; what’s new is the digital layer, where proctoring software replicates that same “somebody is watching to make sure this is fair” function without a human physically in the room.
An online proctored exam uses software — sometimes paired with a live remote human proctor — to supervise a test taken outside a traditional testing center. It comes in three forms: live proctoring (a real person watches you over video), recorded proctoring (your session is recorded and reviewed afterward), and AI/automated proctoring (software flags suspicious behavior for later human review). Most institutions blend recorded and AI proctoring.
A quiet, well-lit room (ideally free of roommates, siblings, and any pet with main-character energy); a functioning webcam and microphone; a clear desk with no papers, second monitor, or notes; stable, tested internet; and a government-issued ID for identity verification. Many platforms also lock your browser down, disabling copy-paste, new tabs, and other applications.
Detection & Monitoring
What proctoring software watches, records, and flags.
Platforms combine several layers: eye and gaze tracking, head pose analysis, audio monitoring, browser and screen activity tracking, multiple-monitor and secondary-device detection, keystroke pattern analysis, and 360-degree room scans. They aren’t flawless, but combined they’re considerably more thorough than most students expect.
Generally, yes — visually if a phone is in frame or in your hand, through room scans that check your desk and surroundings, through network monitoring at some institutions, and through audio, since notifications, calls, and vibrations are all picked up by the microphone. Phones are one of the most commonly detected items precisely because they’re the most commonly attempted one.
Many do, especially if scratch paper is shown to the camera as part of the room scan — treat anything on camera as part of the permanent record.
Usually not, unless explicitly permitted. Most platforms can detect connected secondary displays.
Yes — lighting, background noise, and normal fidgeting can all trigger flags. An anxious habit of looking upward while thinking can too. Most institutions allow appeals or review processes for exactly this reason.
Exam Day & Preparation
Getting your tech, your room, and yourself ready.
Test your tech the day before, not five minutes before. Pick a quiet, well-lit room. Read the platform’s specific rules on scratch paper, calculators, and permitted materials. Run any available system check or mock session. Have your ID ready. Sleep properly — fatigue increases fidgeting, which can read as “suspicious.” Know your institution’s tech-failure policy. And study the material: proctored environments limit improvisation, so preparation matters more, not less.
Policies vary by institution — always confirm your school’s specific procedure before exam day, not during a panic.
Generally yes — reach out to your institution’s disability services or testing office well before the exam date to arrange this properly.
Yes. ProctorU, Honorlock, Proctorio, Examity, Proctortrack, PSI Bridge, Mercer | Mettl, Talview, Respondus LockDown Browser, Safe Exam Browser, ProctorExam, Wheebox, Digiexam, Inspera, and Janison each behave a little differently. See our platform guides for how each works and a practical tip for each.
Academic Integrity
The honest answers to the questions people search for.
The consequences are serious and don’t fade the way a bad grade does: a zero on the exam, failing the course, a formal academic integrity hearing, a permanent notation on your transcript, suspension or expulsion for serious or repeat cases, and revocation of professional certifications or licenses for high-stakes exams. A single bad exam is forgettable. An academic misconduct finding follows you.
Technically, people offer this. Realistically, it’s one of the fastest routes to the consequences above — most platforms are engineered to detect identity mismatches through ID verification, live facial comparison, and behavioral baselining. What you can pay for, and what we specialize in, is expert tutoring, practice exams under simulated proctored conditions, and one-on-one prep sessions that get you ready to take (and pass) the real thing yourself.
Usually it refers to a stand-in who logs in and takes the test for someone else. It isn’t a safe or smart move — identity verification, live proctors, and behavioral analysis are designed to catch exactly this. Instead, we offer tutoring, subject-matter walkthroughs, mock proctored sessions, and tech-readiness support, so you don’t need a stand-in — you need twenty quiet minutes of confidence.
